WELLINGTON/SYDNEY, March 16 (Reuters) - Reports from the outer islands of Vanuatu on Monday painted a picture of utter destruction after a monster cyclone tore through the South Pacific island nation, flattening buildings and killing at least eight people.

Disaster management officials and relief workers were struggling to establish contact with the islands that bore the brunt of Cyclone Pam's winds of more than 300 kph (185 mph), which destroyed homes, smashed boats and washed away roads and bridges as it struck late on Friday and into Saturday.

Devastating cyclone in Vanuatu - Seychelles pledges $100,000 to relief efforts

17-March-2015
Seychelles has pledged US $100,000 to Vanuatu to help in on-going emergency relief efforts while President James Michel has addressed a message of condolence and solidarity to Ni-Vanuatu President Baldwin Lonsdale.

This was revealed in a message President Michel has sent to President Lonsdale and the government and people of Vanuatu, on behalf of the government and people of Seychelles, following a devastating cyclone which has ravaged the Pacific island nation.

President Michel has expressed his grief and sadness at the catastrophic devastation and the human suffering caused by cyclone Pam to Vanuatu.

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the government and the people of Vanuatu on the loss of life and the widespread destruction of property.

“The thoughts and prayers of the Seychellois people are with Vanuatu in these darkest of moments,” said President Michel.

Seychelles, it is to be noted, has long been a champion of small island developing states (Sids) and has emerged as a leading advocate on issues pertaining to climate change.

Understanding the tropical system Madden-Julian Oscillation

Understanding the tropical system Madden-Julian Oscillation

Seychellois to join US researchers to analyse data collected here

A Meteorological Services staff will join US researchers at the University of Notre Dame to help with the analysis of data collected in Seychelles in an attempt to better understand the tropical system Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and what really initiates it.

Discovered by Roland Madden and Paul Julian in 1971, the MJO is the most important mode of weekly to monthly (sub-seasonal) variability across the tropics.

It can be described as a large-scale coupled convective and atmospheric circulation anomaly that slowly propagates eastward around the equatorial region within a period of 30-90 days at approximately 5 metres per second (m s-1). It affects weather in many parts of the world, but active convection is more prominent over the Indian and western Pacific Oceans where the sea surface temperature is warmer. The MJO has major influence on the active-break phases of the Indian and Australian monsoons. But little is known about its impact on rainfall in the Seychelles.
