Work on new assembly building ‘going well’ - 20.03.2009

Work on the new National Assembly building is progressing very well, the speaker said on Wednesday.

Dr Patrick Herminie and members of the assembly secretariat were visiting the site where the new building is going up on Ile du Port.

After a guided inspection tour of the half-finished building, Dr Herminie said he is impressed by the amount of work already done during the past six to seven months. He described the work as “impressive and incredible”.

Work on the building started in August last year, following the laying of the foundation stone in March the same year.

Dr Herminie said that after discussions with project officers, he is confident that if all goes well work will be completed by September or October.

Meanwhile, he announced that a delegation from the assembly headed by him will leave Seychelles for China this weekend.

Apart from paying courtesy calls on their Chinese counterparts, the delegation will also visit a factory that is providing all the furniture for the new assembly building. The Chinese government is donating a million yuan (about R2.4 million) for that.

The delegation will also be looking at electronic equipment, including sound facilities and a PA system, which the Chinese government is also financing.

Dr Herminie said if all goes well he hopes the next state-of-the-nation-address will be heard in the new assembly building.
