Julian Assange 'leaving embassy soon' as Ecuador seeks Foreign Secretary's assurance of safe passage

Julian Assange has confirmed he will be “leaving the [Ecuadorian] embassy soon”, as he and the Ecuadorian ambassador made a desperate plea for a final solution to the stalemate currently gripping the WikiLeaks founder.

Assange was speaking at a press conference at the embassy this morning, addressing the “human rights breaches” that he says have led to his self-imposed house arrest for two years.

He said that he would not be leaving for the reasons that the "Rupert Murdoch press" have stated and also rejected claims that the accusations he is wanted on relate to rape allegations.

It had been reported earlier that he is suffering from arrhythmia (abnormal heart beats), high blood pressure and other health problems associated with a lack of Vitamin D, after his not being exposed to sunlight for that length of time, and that he would need to leave the embassy to go to hospital.

It had also been reported that he would leave to "give himself up" to police.

Home Office shoots down Julian Assange's claim about extradition law change

Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, has disclosed he intends to leave the foreign embassy where he has claimed political asylum for more than two years as part of his long-running bid to avoid extradition on sex crime allegations.
In the first indication that the stand-off which has cost the British taxpayer £7 million may be drawing to a close, Mr Assange said he would “soon” leave the Ecuadorian embassy in west London.
During a halting and sometimes contradictory press conference in the embassy, Mr Assange thanked the British Government for making recent changes to extradition laws.

Sweden drops sexual assault investigations against WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange, rape investigation remains open

Sweden drops sexual assault investigations against WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange, rape investigation remains open

HELSINKI—Swedish prosecutors said Thursday they have dropped three cases of sexual misconduct against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange because they have expired, but said they still want to question him on accusations of rape made after his visit to Stockholm five years ago.
The Swedish Prosecution Authority said it has been unable to charge the 44-year-old Australian, who escaped a Swedish arrest warrant by taking refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London in 2012, because it has not been possible to question him.
The agency said it has stopped investigating a case of sexual molestation and one of unlawful coercion that expired Thursday, and a third case of sexual molestation, which would have seen its statute of limitations expire on Aug. 18. However, it said Assange, who has not been indicted in Sweden, was still wanted for questioning on allegations of rape. This will expire in 2020.
