Peter Preston, former Guardian editor, dies aged 79

Peter Preston, who died yesterday, was a giant of British journalism. He edited the Guardian at a time when Fleet Street was being transformed by new technology and expanded the paper’s readership at a time when competition was fierce.
He was editor when the paper, with real courage, broke the "cash-for-questions" affairs that so damaged John Major's government - a defining moment in British politics.
Even after retiring, he never stopped working, becoming a hugely respected media columnist and commentator. The media landscape in this country is all the better for his contribution through six remarkable decades.
