The Seychelles Tourism Board is relocating

26-August-2017
The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) will soon be running its operations to market and promote the Seychelles islands as a tourist destination at a new location.
The STB will be moving from the Espace building, where it has been based since 2013, to its new headquarters at the Botanical House at Mont Fleuri.
The move will be taking place during the week of August 28 - 31.
The STB offices will be occupying the ground and first floor of the recently built glass-fronted building at Mont Fleuri, which also houses the secretariat of the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine.
The chief executive of the STB, Sherin Francis, said there may be some disruptions to the services during this period, especially on August 30 and 31, when the STB offices will be closed.
She added that normal operations will resume on September 1, 2017, just in time for the start of another busy season of promotional activities and key events.
One of the main events locally is the Tourism week, an annual weeklong event at the end of September which coincides with World Tourism Day.
On the international front, the Top Resa tourism trade fair in France is one of the key promotional events coming up, also at the end of September.
The contact numbers and email addresses of the STB remain the same despite the office move.

Environment is a cornerstone of the tourism industry,’ STB chief tells Sky News

Environment is a cornerstone of the tourism industry,’ STB chief tells Sky News

18-November-2017

The chief executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), Sherin Francis, was interviewed by several high profile media organisations while attending the World Travel Market (WTM) in London. The 2017 WTM was held from November 6 to 8.
Seychelles’ consistent tourism growth was one of the main focus points during the interviews with TTG, Globetrotter TV, FIRST Magazine, fDi Magazine, Sky News and Euronews.
Mrs Francis spoke about the current trend when it comes to arrivals figures, where Seychelles is riding on an 18 percent year-on-year increase in visitors. She also mentioned new air connectivity, including the upcoming direct service from Heathrow to Seychelles by British Airways from March 2018, when highlighting efforts to attract more tourists to the island destination, emphasising the need to ensure sustainable tourism
“For a few years now, we have been experiencing double-digit growth and will end this year on around 350,000 visitors,” Mrs Francis said. “That may seem modest, but we are an island nation of 90,000 people; we do not want huge numbers of tourists. It is about quality, not quantity,” she added.
Going further on this philosophy of ensuring sustainable tourism, her interview on Sky News focused on how aside of balancing a surge of international visitors, the island nation is also actively working to improve the environment.
The country-wide ban on common plastic items such as carrier bags, plates, cups and cutlery that came into effect in Seychelles in July this year, was highlighted as one example of initiatives taken to protect the environment. To note that aside of causing pollution both on land and at sea, floating or broken-down pieces of plastic can be harmful to marine creatures and birds.
Linking tourism and the environment, the STB chief executive explained that with the Seychelles islands covering a total land mass of 455 km² scattered across an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.3 million square kilometres, a lot of the activities proposed to tourists are water-based, hence the need for such measures to be enforced by the government.
“A lot of activities tourists do when they come to Seychelles relates to water -- be it sailing, diving, snorkeling, swimming … our marine environment is part of what we are selling in terms of the Seychelles experience, and if we do not take care of this marine environment that is our bread and butter it is going to be destroyed, because we all know about the effects of plastic on the marine environment. If we can do our part to preserve the marine environment through these small steps the government is taking we are also preserving our tourism industry, we are making it sustainable for the future generation,” Mrs Francis said.
Besides the STB chief executive the various media organisations also interviewed the Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, Ambassador Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, who led the Seychelles delegation to this year’s WTM.

Steiner brings golden opportunities to local beauty and wellness industry

Steiner brings golden opportunities to local beauty and wellness industry

20-November-2017

With a projected 44% increase in cruise passengers for 2017 compared to 2009, the global cruise industry is showing signs of becoming the fastest growing sector in the tourism industry.
In a bid to recruit enthusiastic beauty therapists to join this booming industry, Nadine Brits - the recruitment manager at the renowned Steiner “The Onboard Spa”- in collaboration with the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA), organised an informative conference for Seychellois trained beauty therapists as well as current and former students of STA.
Steiner is one of the leading spa operators on luxury cruise lines such as the Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Costa Cruises and SilverSea, among others.
The multi-billion company partners with 20 cruise lines in total and provides beauty and spa services including acupunctures, hairdressing, beauty and massage therapies as well as fitness services on over 150 cruise ships.
According to Mamoona Alma, a lecturer at the academy, the conference was made possible thanks to a simple Facebook post which Ms Brits had posted on the infamous Gossip Corner.
A few messages and three weeks later Ms Brits on Friday found herself explaining the career opportunities offered by Steiner in front of a group of approximately forty interested candidates at the STA campus in La Misère.
“You will be gaining experiences that are like gold. And even if you decide you’re done with Steiner and you do not want to work on ships anymore, having Steiner on your CV will make everyone want to employ you,” Ms Brits told her audience.
She further added that joining the Steiner spa and wellness cruise family requires a candidate to undergo a job interview, followed by medical tests and a three-week training course at the Steiner Academy in the United Kingdom (UK).

Shannon graduates invited to voice concerns, give views on pertinent matters

20-December-2017

The meeting between the Mentors Committee and the graduates

Seychellois graduates from Shannon College in Ireland who are currently working and holding managerial positions in various hotels across the country have had the chance to voice their concerns, give their views and seek clarifications on matters relating to their work.
They did so through discussions with members of the Mentors Committee of the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) held at the academy at La Misère.
This is the committee’s second meeting which is aimed at providing support to
the graduates by mentoring and ensuring their welfare in their respective organisations.
As panellists on the committee are chairperson Anne Lafortune (principal secretary for tourism), Jules Baker (principal secretary for employment), Flavien Joubert (principal of STA) and a representative from the Agency of National Human Resource Development (ANHRD).
Human resource managers and general managers of hotels where these graduates are working also form part of the committee. They meet every two months.
The recent meeting was graced by the presence of Myriam Telemaque, Minister for Employment, Immigration and Civil Status.
Mrs Lafortune went through the minutes of the previous meeting where she said many issues were covered like updating the graduates’ list on where they are employed; whenever they shift jobs or work places; progress reports, reviews so they reflect their performances in the industry; training and succession plan; career path; training needs in order to move to the next level; request to general managers to submit a succession plan; bonded agreement and a survey for students not in employment.
Mrs Lafortune said as from next year the committee will extend its survey to their areas in related fields.
“What we need to do now is to focus more on the graduates. We can only assist and mentor you if you come forward and talk about it. We want to make sure you get the best out of your training or work,” said Mrs Lafortune.
Even if the graduates were quite silent and were not talking much, certain issues that came out included lack of feedback from managers while one wanted a change of career path but nonetheless remaining in the hotel industry.
“I want to move to finance instead of in operations,” said one of them.

The graduates were later on treated to a dance and dinner at the STA.

L’Académie du Tourisme des Seychelles et le Groupe Vatel France et Belgique

19-April-2018
